Portrait of left profile of infamous actor John Wilkes Booth , wearing hair parted at the side , a handlebar mustache , and a dark suit jacket . Born May 10 , 1838 , the youngest brother of renowned actors Edwin Booth and Junius Brutus Booth , Jr. , Booth assassinated President Abraham Lincoln at Ford's Theatre in Washington , D.C . on April 14 , 1865 . He died April 26 , 1865 after being captured by Union soldiers . John Wilkes Booth never appeared at Macauley's , having died eight years before the theatre opened , but his brothers Edwin and Junius made a combined total of eight visits there in the 1870s and 1880s . Annotation on mount verso , center : J . W . B . Then hide him away from the sad eye of day , 'neathe a coral of sea green abisses - Where the mermaids so gay as they sport 'neathe the spray may purple his pale lips with kisses .
