Description
Three-quarter length character portrait of performer , producer , and arranger Joseph Jefferson III in costume for the role of Bob Acres in "The Rivals. " He stands before an outdoor backdrop , wearing a tri-corner hat , jacket with tails , and pants tucked into knee-high boots , and holding a gun in the crook of his left arm and another in his right hand . Jefferson was born in 1829 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania , and died April 23 , 1905 in Palm Beach , Florida . His father and grandfather , both also named Joseph Jefferson , were stage actors as well , as were his sons , Thomas Jefferson , Joseph Jefferson , and William Jefferson . Joseph Jefferson III appeared at Macauley's Theatre thirty-four times beginning in 1880 . He starred as Bob Acres in Richard Brinsley Sheridan's "The Rivals " in December 1889 ; October 1881 ; December 1882 ; December 1883 ; December 1891 ; and April 1900 .
