Three-quarter length portrait of Al G . Field , performer and proprietor of Al G . Field's Minstrels , seated and wearing a hat , suit jacket , white vest , and necktie . Born Alfred Griffith Hatfield in Virginia on November 7 , 1848 , he had his last name legally changed to Field in 1881 . Field's Minstrels made twenty-seven appearances at Macauley's Theatre between 1894 and 1924 , usually opening the season , and continuing even after Field's death (in Columbus , Ohio) on April 3 , 1921 . Inscription on mount , lower right : Sincerely yours Al G . Field . Location of photo studio : Columbus (Ohio) . Title supplied by cataloger .
