Portrait of performer Howard Gould wearing a suit jacket and black bow tie . Born in St . Anthony , Minnesota , circa 1864 , he appeared in Leo Trevor's "Brother Officers " at Macauley's Theatre in October 1901 , likely the occasion for the inscription of this portrait . Gould also appeared at Macauley's Theatre in "The Idler " (November - December 1894) ; "The Prisoner of Zenda " (February and November 1897 , December 1898) ; and "Rupert of Hentzau " (December 1900) . He died February 3 , 1938 in Winthrop , Massachusetts . Inscription on print , lower center : Sincerely Howard Gould . Inscription on mount verso : To Col . Macauley's with the kindest regards of Howard Gould October 19th , 1901 . Location of photo studio : Boston (Mass.) . Title supplied by cataloger .
