Her feet and the chair rest on a bearskin rug . Annie Fellows Johnston's based the physical attributes of the character Betty in her Little Colonel books on this girl , whose real name was Elizabeth Matthews . Elizabeth was also a niece of the photographer , Kate Matthews . Handwritten on verso in Kate Matthews ' handwriting : "Betty Matthews as 'Betty Lewis' ", "The Little Colonel Books ", and "Betty ' of Yesterday ".
