Engraving of Louisville City Hospital , with horse-drawn carriages and pedestrians pictured within and outside of its grounds . Handwritten on bottom edge of mounted print : "R.G . Potter Collection / City Hospital / Original hospital opened in 1823 East Chestnut , cost $16,000 / Capacity 50 beds , with several rooms reserved for paying / Thomas Prather & Cuthbert Bullitt donated the land on which hospital was built. " Two new wings were added in 1836 , when the building was renamed Louisville City Hospital , so this engraving likely dates from 1836 at the earliest .
