Description
The Art Studio , a small brick building . The front entrance and a covered side entrance are visible . There is ivy growing on the front of the building , and leaves on the grass in the foreground . The Art Studio was razed in 1979 to make room for Ekstrom Library . UofL took control of the building in 1925 , when it purchased the land surrounding (what later became) Belknap Campus . Doug Stern's History of Belknap Campus gives building date of circa 1890 . Campus maps from 1930s call it "Art Studio "; in the period 1944-1955 it was referred to as the Religious Center ; maps from 1955-1979 call it the "Art Center. " Location : Belknap Campus : Central Campus , west (near present-day Ekstrom Library) . Former names : Religious Center , Art Center . Former uses : Art studio ; classroom ; religious center for campus ; set up as music appreciation/listening center in the 1930s by Ms . Fryberger ; Catholic Chapel (for Industrial School of Reform) , 1910 ; supply and storage area , circa 1890 .
