Description
This building was the second home of Louisville Collegiate Institute , or Louisville College . Louisville Collegiate Institute was created November 14 , 1837 with provisions for seven departments : Mental and Moral Science and Political Economy ; Mathematics , Natural Science and Civil Engineering ; Latin , Greek and Hebrew ; Modern Languages ; Belles Lettres and History ; Elementary Branches and English Literature ; and History and the Principles of Agriculture , Manufacture and the Mechanic Arts . It initially occupied the old Jefferson Seminary building . In 1846 the state legislature merged Louisville College and the Louisville Medical Institute to form the University of Louisville . Louisville College became the Academic Department of the University and moved to the new Academic Department building , recently built beside the Louisville Medical Institute on "University Square. " The institution that became Louisville's Male High School occupied the building beginning in 1856 ; later , Louisville's Central High School was housed there. Location : Downtown : 8th and Chestnut Streets .
