Description
"This ring is formed from a circular hollow band made from rolled and soldered gold leaf , which flares out near the bezel . The bezel , rectangular in shape but with rounded corners , is set with a blue-tinged agate in two layers against a white background . The carved stone shows an Eros figure standing in a boat , the rudder of which crosses at the back . Brandishing a whip , the figure drives a pair of dolphins . […] This type of ring , with a slender band becoming wide and convex around the stone , was in style from the first century B.C . to the first century A.D . Generally , the stones were oval . A rectangular-shaped stone is less common . […] The small amount of blank space around the scene , the dolphin's snout , and the end of the cut-off rudder suggest that the edges were chipped when the stone was inserted into the bezel . The chosen subject was very common and appeared in different forms on a variety of supports . Erotes , gods of love , were often seen engaged in dolphin chariot races […]. " (Excerpt from catalogue entry by Agnes Scherer , p . 129) . Provenance unknown . Longstanding part of the collection (BJ 1301) .
