Description |
"Born in Riga in 1938, and transplanted to America in 1949, Celmins has only recently become well known. Her strangely detached, unlocated subjects suggest a radical retreat from the concerns of modern life. Perhaps they relate to her early rootlessness. However, in the 1960s her 'photopaintings' often dwelt on highly specific, violent incidents. Fire was often involved, as in Burning Man (1966), showing a man in flames escaping a car crash. Her expanses of water possibly suggest such horrors have been exorcized." (Caption, p.217); "Celmins's drawings of the late 1960s and early 1970s dealt with issues of proximity and distance. Taking photographs of limitless phenomena, such as the ocean or the star-filled sky, as her models, she transplanted such ungraspable subjects into finite blocks of graphic description, which call for close-up inspection."
