Description |
"Each of On Kawara's Date Paintings is individualized to some degree. Typefaces vary, as do the colors. They are always horizontal in format but each one corresponds to one of eight predetermined sizes." (Caption, p.178); "Much as Conceptualists railed against […] assimilation, they were curiously attracted to bureaucratic language. The redundant aesthetic formulas of Modernism were transformed into a babble of systems and statistics. On 4 January 1966, for instance, the Japanese-born On Kawara started to produce 'date paintings' on an almost daily basis. As tokens of his continuing existence they took the day's date as their subject-matter. He also produced a ten-volume book which listed one million years counting back from 1971, the year it was produced." (Excerpt, p.178) |
