Description |
"Warhol's 'wallpaper' initially decorated a room at Leo Castelli's New York gallery in April, 1966. Another room was devoted to his floating Silver Clouds (helium-filled silver pillows)." (Caption, p.111); "[Robert] Rauschenberg's early 1960s silkscreen paintings appear convoluted alongside the colorful, emblematic images of [Roy] Lichtenstein and Warhol. Borrowing the compositional clarity of contemporaneous abstraction, they employed single images, ready designed from pre-existing commercial sources, in enlarged or repeated formats." (Excerpt, pp.111, 114); "Through aligning himself with 'female' consumption, Warhol came close to [Marcel] Duchamp, who had represented himself in drag on a perfume bottle [Belle Haleine, Eau de Voilette, 1921], but Warhol's taste was more flamboyantly vulgar, especially when it came to opposing Abstract Expressionism's 'virility'. His Cow Wallpaper, its ungainly bovine profiles appearing incongruously 'rural' alongside his urban subjects, repudiated a whole lineage of 'bullish' imagery in twentieth-century art ranging from [Pablo] Picasso's Guernica to [Robert] Motherwell's Elegies. At the same time, in producing 'wallpaper' - the very incarnation of the 'domestic' and 'decorative' - he parodied the broodings of Modernists over where abstract paintings 'ended' compositionally, reveling in the 'philistine' perception of such works as 'wallpaper'.
