Description |
From Kerameikos, [Athens, Greece]. "Comparison of the head of the kouros from the Sacred Gate with the Dipylon Head leaves virtually no doubt that they were created by the same sculptor about 600 BC. He was the first Athenian marble-carver of consequence and the founder of a tradition that was to culminate 150 years later in the marble sculptures of the Parthenon. His name remains unknown, and archaeologists have therefore baptized him the Dipylon Artist. The kouros of the Sacred Gate gives us an idea of the way in which this leading Athenian sculptor rendered the male body in ideal nudity." (Excerpt by Wolf-Dietrich Niemeier, p. 76) |
